A week-long appeal for food donations has elicited an “unbelievable” response to the Eliza Dolittle Daily Bread Programme. One hundred and one organisations filled hundreds of collection boxes for the drive and contributions have poured in at the charity’s warehouse in Paget.“People in Bermuda were generous,” said programme director Margaret Ward, surveying the as-yet uncounted donations of pasta, canned fruit, pancake mix and other non-perishable donations.Collections are continuing at some organisations, she said, while up to 70 volunteers will help sort the food into categories through the rest of this week. The food will then be divided among the Coalition for the Protection of Children, the Salvation Army, Centre Against Abuse, Hands of Love, Meals on Wheels and Daily Bread.Ms Ward said an emergency load of food had already been sent to the Centre Against Abuse, for a needy family with several children.“It shows what a need there is,” she said. “But the amount we’re collecting should cover all the charities at least through to Christmas.”So far, schools have come top in the collections. Two truck drivers collected at least 200 boxes.“There’s enough food in Bermuda for everyone,” Ms Ward said.
