Careers fair set for next week

A careers fair geared toward younger workers will also reach out to jobless and transitioning adults, Economy Minister Kim Wilson announced.Calling for public and private entities to address economic challenges in unison, Senator Wilson said the fair next week at Bermuda College will have about 80 exhibitors profiling “career opportunities for Bermuda’s youth, and for those seeking career advice”.Conceding that there were “limited job prospects” at the moment, the Minister added: “We believe, however, that it is still important to provide a solid advisory service to those young people, and to those individuals seeking guidance in how to navigate in this tough job market.”Event chairman Ralph Richardson said the career transition component of the fair was a new feature.“We will have an extended period of the fair for those in transition or looking for jobs,” Mr Richardson said, cautioning that the two-day event aimed to deliver advice rather than provide jobs directly. At some point, Bermuda’s fortunes will turn around. An awful mistake that some people make is not to prepare for the turnaround.”The seventh annual Career Fair will provide “sound career advice to adults, whether unemployed, seeking to upgrade, or looking to become an entrepreneur”, Mr Richardson added. The fair will be held on October 13 and October 14 at the Bermuda College, from 10am to 3pm.Bermuda’s economy “will return to the heights experienced before the economic challenge”, Sen Wilson said. She said the fair was “another step in readying Bermudians to take their place in the workforce”.According to organisers, last year’s fair was attended by 2,500 people.
