Designer seeks sponsorship for safe sex campaign

Graphic designer Hafid James is a 25-year-old Bermudian who has been trying to get Government to run his safe sex campaign for a year.

A safe sex campaign has failed to garner support even though a survey shows more people are putting themselves at risk with multiple partners.Graphic designer Hafid James has spent more than a year tirelessly working on an awareness campaign to warn people of the dangers of unprotected sex.The 25-year-old has already designed a series of hard-hitting posters to put up in the Island’s senior schools, as well as bars and restaurants. But Mr James’ plans have been put on hold as he has been unable to secure sponsorship of just a few thousand dollars to “make it happen”.Mr James says the money would also cover the campaign launch with up to 500 people across the Island wearing red T-shirts with the words ‘I’m HIV negative’ in white letters.Mr James met officials from the Ministry of Health at the end of last year, but was told Government would not support the campaign because of Budget cuts. However, Mr James remains undeterred and is to reapproach Government in the hope that the campaign can be launched to coincide with World AIDS Day on December 1.The plans for the safe sex campaign come after Health Minister Zane DeSilva highlighted the “worrying” and “disturbing trend” of people’s sex lives.A Government and Bermuda Health Council survey of the Island’s health trends found those with more than one sexual partner in the past year had leaped 17 points from six percent to 23 percent in five years.Mr DeSilva vowed to immediately tackle this as people with multiple sexual partners were putting themselves at risk of spreading sexually transmitted infections and exposure to HIV.The survey also found that 26 percent of people were 15 or younger when they first had sex and HIV testing had declined with 44 percent having been tested compared to 49 percent in 2006.Mr James said: “It’s very important to raise awareness of safe sex. You only have to look around to see how much of a problem it is.“Many people are having unprotected or unsafe sex. There is a high teenage pregnancy rate and people my age often have children with more than one baby daddy.“I’m not judging anyone, but it’s very risky behaviour and people need to be smart.“STDs and HIV are preventable. We have to get the message across to our young people”.Mr James added that it was “easy to get tested” and said getting volunteers of all ages to wear the ‘I’m HIV negative’ T-shirts for the day would show that “no one knows who has what”.He said: “I’ve always known there was a problem and a need for an awareness campaign, I’ve wanted to do this for such a long time.“Hopefully these survey results will push things along, it’s really not a lot of money”.Mr James is the name behind the poster campaign and mannequin window display for Domestic Abuse Awareness Month. His artwork can currently be seen on a series of posters on display across Hamilton.Mr James returned to Bermuda last year after graduating from Humber College in Toronto with plans to “make a difference where it’s needed”.He said: “I’ve pretty much got all the pieces of this campaign together, it’s an issue I feel passionate about but I just need a bit of money to make it happen.“This campaign will be something different, something unusual to catch people’s attention. He added: “I think being creative is a gift and feel I should use it to give back to the community”.Shadow Health Minister Kathy Michelmore said: “An increase in the number of sexual partners obviously increases the risk of exposure to infection, and those who are not in stable, one-partner relationships should protect themselves by using condoms”.The Ministry of Health did not respond to our requests for comment.
