Jobless rate soars
Census data confirms a sharp rise in unemployment, and the fact that more Bermudians are out of work.On Census Day 2010 the number of unemployed totaled 2,581 persons, a rate of six percent, but is now expected to be somewhat higher at eight percent, however, the unemployment rate for Bermudians is higher than the national average found on Census Day.In 2000 the unemployment rate for Bermudians was just three percent. Bermudian men were hardest hit.“Since the 2010 Census data collection of persons unemployed references the week of May 13th 2010, it is reasonable to expect that the rates of unemployment in this report have grown higher given the subsequent number of employee layoffs that have occurred,” reads the Preliminary results.With an unemployment rate of seven percent, men in the labour force found it harder to get a job than women whose unemployment rate was recorded at six percent.While Bermuda’s working population grew by 268 persons or one percent to 37,146 workers between the two Censuses, the number of women entering the workplace increased by 607, while the number of men in the workplace declined by 339.Bermudian share of the total labour force grew by three percent, or 948 persons.Most of this increase was attributed to the fact that 893 more Bermudian women entered the workplace, compared to 55 more men. “The employment gap widened between Bermudian men and women in the labour force since 2000,” the report states. “Females comprised 52 percent of the Bermudian labour force while the proportion of males slipped to 48 percent.”
