Unemployed non-Bermudians more likely to leave
Bermudians make up the same proportion of the population as they did in 2000, Census results show.In 2010, there were 50,533 Bermudians and 13,513 non-Bermudians, indicating 79 percent of the Island were Bermudians and 21 percent were non-Bermudians.Ten years earlier, there were 48,746 Bermudians and 13,256 non-Bermudians, with the percentage breakdown also 79 percent to 21 percent.Non-Bermudians are generally younger than Bermudians, reflecting the fact many are recruited to fill jobs and leave before reaching old age.The average age of Bermudians was 43 compared to 38 for non-Bermudians; the overall average age was 41.Figures also suggest non-Bermudians who lost jobs due to the economic crisis were likely to leave the Country, as the unemployment rate was higher for Bermudians (eight percent) than for the Island as a whole (six percent), indicating few non-Bermudians stay on the Island while unemployed.
