Crime Stoppers 5K Walk and Road Race features new route
The Crime Stoppers 5K Walk and Road Race takes place later this month.Residents are now invited to sign up for the annual event which this year has a new route and a new category for persons aged 60 and older.The event, which is sanctioned by the Bermuda Track and Field Association, starts and finishes at the Argus Building on Wesley Street in Hamilton.Organised by The Argus Group, in association with Swan’s Running Club, it includes a shorter 2.5K course for 12 to 15-year-olds.Everyone who participates in the event will be entered into a prize draw, with prizes including a 16GB iPad and various gift vouchers.Said Crime Stoppers chairman John Drew: “This annual event is an important part of our awareness raising campaign for our phone line 800-7477 (TIPS) and our website, www.crimestoppers.bm, which can both be used to confidentially report any details whatsoever about a crime.“We want people to ‘step up and speak out’ and, with rising gun crime threatening to divide the community, there has never been a more important time.“Our success in uniting the community against criminals relies on our ability to keep Crime Stoppers in the public conscience and we thank the Argus Group for helping us to do that.”The first 400 participants to register will receive a free T-shirt.The top three male and female finishers in each of the following categories will be rewarded with trophies: Walkers, Junior (12-15 years), Youth (16-18 years), Open (19-39 years), Master (40-49 years), Senior (50-59 years) and Veteran (60+ years).There is also a $1,000 prize for the physical education teacher who generates the largest number of entries from their school.Added Alison Hill, chief executive officer of the Argus Group: “As one of the Island’s leading insurance companies, we share Crime Stoppers’ mission of seeking to protect the local community from the tragic consequences of crime.“The resources that Crime Stoppers Bermuda provides are invaluable and we continue to pledge our support for their event, which helps to raise their profile and to focus on keeping Bermuda safe and secure.“We also endorse this event as an opportunity for people to come together and get active as both walking and running provide countless health benefits.”Entry forms are available at the Argus Building and Sportseller in Washington Mall; completed forms are to be returned to Sportseller only. Participants can also register online at www.racedayworld.com. The entry deadline is 4.30pm Friday, October 28.Entry fees are: $30 for adults, $25 for Swan’s Running Club members and $10 for juniors. Race numbers should be picked up by all walkers and runners on Saturday, October 29 between 12pm and 2pm at the Argus Building.Late registration will be accepted at number pick-up for an additional $5; no late entries will be accepted on race day.
