Burch qualifies for Pan Am Games final
Roy Allan Burch posted the second fastest time by a Bermudian swimmer at the Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico today.Burch came to within seven hundredths of a second of his own national record (22.69) en route to qualifying for tonight’s men’s 50 metre freestyle ‘A’ final.He qualified for the ‘A’ final via a swim-off with a Uruguayan rival after both swimmers covered the qualifying heat in a time of 22.96 to finish tied for eighth.But Burch turned on the afterburners in the swim-off, covering the distance in 22.76 seconds to finish fifth overall in the qualifying heats.“The swim off showed his fitness level and his ability to make a quick adjustment in his race,” commented coach Ben Smith. “To swim this close to the best time at this point in the season is encouraging and very exciting.“Tonight will be his biggest final to date and we are all excited to see what he will do next.”Also in action was Lisa Blackburn who swam the women’s 200 metre breaststroke in two minutes, 45 seconds to advance to tonight’s ‘B’ final.
