Marie Celestia wreck featured in ‘Archaeology’ magazine

A new article in ‘Archaeology’ magazine details how an international team including local anthropologist Phillipe Rouja uncovered hidden treasures on Bermuda’s Marie Celestia shipwreck. The team discovered unopened wine bottles, bottles of perfume, a wooden case, the remains of the boatswain’s locker and a secret stash of contraband as they explored the blockade runner ship, 147 years after she sank off South Shore. The team has been working with Bermuda’s Department of Conservation Services, and Deputy Premier Derrick Burgess spoke of the discoveries earlier this summer, describing them as “fascinating”.The excavation also revealed a wooden hairbrush, three pairs of leather shoes and a wooden last for making shoes, which were rare during the Confederacy and were highly valued commodities.‘Archaeology’ is a publication of the Archaeological Institute of America, and the article is featured in the November / December issue. The full article can be read at www.mary-celestia.com/press/ and www.archaeology.org.
