Swan welcomes CeaseFire move
MP Kim Swan has today welcomed a decision to examine a new programme that could help rid Bermuda of its gangs.National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief has confirmed he is keen to put the global violence prevention programme, CeaseFire, to the test on Bermuda’s streets.Mr Swan, who was elected to serve as a United Bermuda Party in 2007, said: "In May of this year - in what now was one of my last duties as the Leader of the Opposition - the newly appointed National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief agreed to meet with me on our mutual concerns about public safety and the need to work together in a bipartisan manner.“At that meeting, I invited my Shadow Minister, then Senator Michael Dunkley, to share with Minister Perinchief the merits of Operation CeaseFire which Mr Dunkley and the United Bermuda Party had been advocating.“Following the meeting Minister Perinchief agreed to keep an open mind and even invited the then UBP Senator Dunkley to join him on Let's Talk that same evening to discuss Public Safety.”Mr Swan added: “At that meeting it was also shared with Mr Perinchief that the potential for financial donors for Operation CeaseFire from the private sector existed - as they were very supportive of the initiative and had expressed through Mr Dunkley a willingness to partner with government in the implementation of a Bermuda model.”* For the full CeaseFire story click here.
