Tropical storm watch called as Sean approaches
Windy, wet weather will intensify this week as a tropical storm approaches the Island.Forecasters placed Tropical Storm Sean at 420m southwest of Bermuda yesterday afternoon. Its closest point to the Island - about 84 miles to the northwest - is expected to be around 6am on Friday. In the event that the Remembrance Day Parade is rained out that day, the event will be moved from the Cenotaph at Front Street to the Anglican Cathedral on Church Street. The ceremony is due to start at 10.30am.Meanwhile the 2011 Rugby Classic started yesterday after high winds cancelled matches on Sunday and Monday. The annual event remains scheduled to run through Saturday, but fans are advised to check www.worldrugby.bm for updates. The latest storm follows several days’ bad weather whipped up by a low pressure system that came off the US East.Gale force winds over the weekend led to scattered power cuts, a delayed start to the Rugby Classic, and the rescue of crew from a yacht stricken near the Island.Bermuda is likely to feel tropical storm force winds from tomorrow evening through Friday morning as Sean passes close to our northwest. The storm’s nearest approach could be roughly 100m on Friday morning.Packing winds of 50mph, Sean is currently moving northwest but swerving northwards. Forecasters expect it to make a turn for Bermuda early tomorrow.Storm force southerly winds tomorrow night should gradually diminish and veer northwards through Friday as the system passes by.With scant weeks remaining in this year’s tropical season, Sean was initially classed a subtropical storm.Bermuda Weather Service director Mark Guishard explained that such storms typically form either early or late in the season.Sean can be tracked with satellite images and forecasts, through The Royal Gazette’s online weather page at www.royalgazette.com.
