Confidence in police has increased, survey shows
A recent survey shows an increased confidence in the Bermuda Police Force, according to National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief. The Minister said that based on the results of the telephone survey, carried out between June 20 and July 4 this year, 83 percent of respondents were either completely satisfied, or had a high level of satisfaction with the Police Service. He said respondents described officers as professional, respectful and courageous and that, among those who reported a positive experience with the police, 42 percent said the reason was personal and helpful service from officers.“Concern about crime remains high, but residents have seen the positive impact of bringing criminals to justice and convictions in the courts as a result of police investigation,” he said.“Criminals are being caught and in many cases suspects are apprehended and brought before the courts quickly. These actions significantly enhance public confidence in the Police Service’s ability to solve crimes.”He also said that two-thirds of those surveyed expressed an interest in neighbourhood involvement as a means of tackling crime, saying that empowered communities are the building block for a safer Bermuda.“The confidence inspired by Police presence and action has created a groundswell of community involvement that will promote public safety throughout the Island.“I was privileged to spend time with the officer of the Community Action Team (CAT) and found a spirit in these communities that is simply awesome.“In each of the CAT team areas, residents have bonded with officers, they have cleaned up overgrown sites, formerly scenes of antisocial behaviour, and have stamped their positive authority on the neighbourhood, driving the elements of negativity away and underground.“The strategy is working, criminals are being brought to justice, and communities are confident and empowered. We must continue to support these efforts.”
