Missing Bermuda-bound sailor found safe and well
Round-the-world sailor Sergei Morozov has been located after his flares were spotted by a crew aboard a merchant vessel.Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre said this afternoon that Mr Morozov is now proceeding towards the Island on his 35ft sailboat Hikari Dreammaker, having received food and supplies from merchant vessel Luisia Colossus.Last night, the US Coast Guard had been searching for the lone sailor, after his daughter reported him overdue in Bermuda.He was discovered by the Luisia Colossus in the early hours of this morning. BMOC says his vessel is suffering from engine failure but he should be able to sail towards the Island in the next two or three days, before being towed into St George's.His trip to Bermuda is the first leg of his circumnavigation, in his bid to find sponsors for a future attempt to row around the world.Mr Morozov was reported overdue by his daughter on Monday. He was the lone sailor on board his 35ft sailboat Hikari.His trip to Bermuda was intended to be the first leg in an around-the-world journey to find sponsors for a future attempt to row around the world.A statement from the Coast Guard issued yesterday said: “At approximately 6.30am, the Coast Guard launched a crew aboard an HC-130 Hercules from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, to search for Mr Morozov.“The Coast Guard is searching the Atlantic Ocean approximately 300 miles northeast of Bermuda for a sailor aboard a 35ft sailboat after he was reported overdue, Monday.”The Coast Guard used the Inmarsat C maritime mobile satellite system to send out an enhanced group call asking mariners to keep a lookout for Hikari. Bermuda’s Harbour Radio has been sending out voice broadcasts calling for the ship.Searches for the sailboat on Tuesday proved fruitless,According to Harbour Radio, the search was expanded yesterday after the Coast Guard received a phone call suggesting that Mr Morozov may have decided to bypass the Island and sail directly to the Caribbean.The Hikari is described as a Canadian-registered, 35-foot sloop sailing vessel with a white hull.The Coast Guard is asking anyone with information on Mr Morozov or the sailing vessel to telephone 757-398-6390.Useful website: www.uscg.mil, www.hikari-around-the-world.com/en/.
