Greens fees at the St George’s Golf Course have dropped to $30 in an effort to woo golfers to the East End.Sally Kyle said that business has been slow this year despite work being done to improve the state of the course.“I think that the Chamber of Commerce, along with small businesses are working hard to keep the course open,” said Mrs Kyle, of the St George’s Club. “Initially there were some issues with maintaining the greens, but we are getting around that.“There were issues. After all that rain we had the grass grew and we didn’t have any way of cutting it, but other courses and hotels have been very kind to us and loaned us equipment so we could maintain the course.“There are some local lads who are using motorcycles on the course and that causes some damage to the greens, which is a pity because this has been a community effort.”A round of golf at the course costs $30, while renting a hand cart or a set of golf clubs costs $10 and $60 respectively.Motorised carts are still not allowed on the course Mrs Kyle said that members of the community are currently working to change that.Occupancy levels at the St George’s Club are still reasonably high, she added.“We don’t really know what next year will bring, however we are the only hotel in this part of the Island and we do have two restaurants that are open to the public, one seasonally and the other year round,” she said. The town of St George has experienced challenges due to a reduction in cruise ship visitors.Mrs Kyle said that despite this, new businesses have set up shop. She expressed hope that events such as the planned New Year’s Eve celebration will help reintroduce the public to the town.“There are a lot of young businesses that have started up in the town and they are trying to make a difference. They are repainting and taking some pride in the town,” she said.“We just hope that locals will come back and start to visit the town.”
