Miss Teen Bermuda wins coveted Caribbean award
A Bermudian law student talked her way into an award at a prestigious beauty competition held in the Caribbean.Shaunte Simons, 17, won the Best Interview award at the Miss Talented Teen Haynes Smith Digicel Pageant held last Thursday in Basseterre, St Kitts, beating out 12 other contestants. She won the right to compete in St Kitts, after being crowned the winner of Miss Teen Bermuda Islands 2011 pageant held in August. At that time, she also won Miss Sweet Charity 2011.“In St Kitts, they asked her about Bermuda and about herself,” said Terry Smith, organiser of the local competition. “It was an important part of the competition, and she was definitely a wonderful ambassador for Bermuda. We were expecting her to do well. This is our third time participating in the pageant in the Caribbean. This time we won the best interview category and another time Alexa Lightbourne won third runner up. Two out of three isn’t bad.”Winning this particular competition is perhaps a great boost to Miss Simons’ future career which requires a lot of talking. She is a graduate of Saltus Grammar School, and is currently studying law at the University of West England in the United Kingdom. She plans to return to Bermuda to do her pupillage and be called to the Bermuda Bar. Her eventual goal is to become a judge in the Bermuda Court system after establishing and working in her own law firm. Earlier in the year, she won an education award from the Bermuda International Companies group.“I have dreamed of becoming a lawyer ever since I was five years old,” she said. “I have always been actively involved in the community and have completed over 400 hours of community service.”Miss Simons is a volunteer with the Bermuda Hospitals Board and Youth Net. She also works as a Sunday School teacher at the St David’s Glory Temple New Testament Church.
