Water pumping problem hits inmates at Co-Ed
Inmates at the Co-Ed Facility are getting their baths with water boiled in the kitchen, due to problems with the water tank. The building also experienced problems with toilet-flushing, while laundry had to be washed at the nearby Prison Farm when water ceased pumping on Saturday. It’s understood water had to be manually taken from the water tank for flushing while workmen repaired the pump.Toilets are now flushing properly, but a Department of Corrections spokeswoman yesterday said the facility is still without pumping water for drinking and bathing. Inmates are drinking bottled water in the mean time, she said. One source told The Royal Gazette: “They’ve got people working and living there on a daily basis so it isn’t much fun for them.”The Corrections spokeswoman said water ceased pumping at 6.30pm on Saturday. A plumber discovered the valve had broken off into the water tank, meaning it needed to be drained, a process which took until Tuesday. She said yesterday afternoon: “To accommodate bathing, water was boiled in the kitchen and sent to the sections, bottled water was issued to the inmates for drinking and laundry was sent to the nearby Prison Farm facility, at Ferry Reach, St George’s.“While toilets are now flushing, the Co-Ed Facility is still without pumping water for drinking and bathing. However the problem is being actively worked on.”
