Fewer than 20 people turn out for anti-violence, unity march
By Owain Johnston-BarnesLess than a week after a 24-year-old man was shot dead, fewer than 20 people took part in a community march in an effort to build unity. The march, organised by Sancia Garrison, brought participants down South Road in Warwick, starting from the gates of Warwick Camp.In a post on The Royal Gazette's Facebook page, Mrs Garrison wrote: “We MUST stand us one firm in our conviction and resolve to make our island a safe home for this generation and future generations. Let's STAND TALL, SHOULDER TO SHOULDER.”The marchers seemed upbeat, despite the low turnout and scattered rain and the occasional sound of gunfire from the Bermuda Regiment, who were involved in Recruit Camp 2012.None of the marchers carried signs, but several wore shirts calling for unity. The event was just one of many that have been held as a reaction to the recent incidents of gun violence, including a series of candlelight vigils to remember the lives that have been lost. The most recent firearms death was Stefan Burgess, who died after being shot on Glebe Road on January 8th. A second man was hurt in the incident, but his injuries were not life threatening.
