Celebrities and politicians mingled this weekend at the Syncairly Yours Foundation’s Diamonds and Caviar Gala at the Newstead.Organiser Molessia Joynes said the event was an absolute success, but unfortunately the demand for seats overtook capacity.“We were actually oversold. It was supposed to be a private event for 100 people, but 150 turned up,” she said.The event, held on Saturday, was intended to help raise public awareness of premature birth.The foundation was founded after Ms Joynes daughter, Selessia, almost died giving birth to her son, Syncair, at just 25 weeks.Once she had recovered, she found herself facing hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical expenses because she was uninsured.Along with celebrities, including celebrated actor Danny Glover and lawyer and journalist Star Jones, the event was also attended by Premier Paula Cox and Governor Sir Richard Gozney.Claudette King, the youngest daughter of legendary blues musician BB King performed during the gala.While she said it is still too soon to gauge how much money was raised by the event, Ms Joynes said the main goal was to raise awareness, not money.“From that perspective, I know it has been successful,” she said.She said she hopes to organise another event in around three months, with some of the appearing celebrities already expressing interest in returning. However right now, she said that she and her team are looking forward to a short break after a month-and-a-half spent organising the gala.The foundation also hosted a “Pink Carpet Walk” at the City Hall Theatre, sponsored by the Department of Tourism and Spanish Town Entertainment, to help promote the event and the foundation.
