Two schools win $500 in Recycle Mania
Port Royal Primary and Mount St Agnes schools have each been awarded $500 for their recycling efforts as part of Recycle Mania.The promotion, organised by the Ministry of Public Works, was intended to promote awareness of the Island’s recycling programme, resulted in a total of 21,484 aluminium cans being collected over the course of one week by 2,814 students.A Public Works spokesman said: “Weighing in at 616lbs, all the aluminium recycled by Bermuda’s schools equates to energy savings of 328 gallons of oil, or enough energy to run a television for 64,452 hours, or seven years and four months.”Students at Port Royal Primary collected an average of 27.1 cans per student to win the prize for primary school level, while MSA students grades six, seven and eight collected 5.1 cans per student to win the middle school prize.Public Works Minister Micheal Weeks said: “I am encouraged by the amount of cans collected by students across the Island.“This just goes to show how much can be recycled and kept out of the waste stream at the Tynes Bay Waste-to-Energy facility.“Hopefully these students will embrace what they have learned and encourage their friends and family to do the same and reduce, reuse and recycle.”
