Minister: Labour Day could move to May
Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Patrice Minors is canvassing opinion on changing the Labour Day holiday from September to May.In a press release yesterday, she said consultation with stakeholders will soon begin as the date-change request was recently submitted to her for consideration by the Bermuda Trade Union Congress. The request was tabled this week before the Labour Advisory Council.Mrs Minors said: “While there was astounding support for the proposal, I think it's important to first consult with other key stakeholders for comment and input before the matter is put before (my) Cabinet colleagues for decision.”Labour Day is celebrated in Bermuda with parades and speeches each year in early September, and is scheduled this year for September 3.Ms Minors said the reason for the proposed change is that International Workers' Day, also known as May Day, is observed as a national holiday on May 1 in more than 80 countries.Bermuda is considering joining the other countries in celebrating the labour movement on that day instead.
