Plane diverts after flight attendant is hurt
A flight attendant scalded her face on a flight from Barbados to the UK, causing the flight to be diverted to Bermuda.According to passenger Ian Clarke, the woman was injured when hot steam scorched her face as she was preparing food mid-flight on Thursday. The plane, owned by Thomson Airways, had been chartered by Fred Olsen Cruises.“We were about half an hour or so into the flight when the stewardess, accompanied by one of the others, came up the aisle and into the captain’s cabin. She looked in distress and had a cloth over her face and everybody wondered what had happened,”said Mr Clarke of Waltham Abbey in southern England. It was later said by other crew members that the woman scolded her face with hot steam either when removing food from a hot oven or opening one of the containers.“The captain called for anybody medical on board and two nurses and a doctor made themselves known,” said Mr Clarke. The captain announced about an hour later that the flight was diverting to Bermuda so the woman could receive hospital treatment. The plane touched down around 11.30pm Bermuda time and took off just over an hour later, after refuelling.Airport general manager Aaron Adderley confirmed the incident took place, commenting: “We generally get a fair number of both medical and equipment (related) diversions.”A King Edward VII Memorial Hospital spokeswoman said there was no record of the woman being admitted as a patient, suggesting she may have been treated in the emergency room and released. No one from Thomson Airways could be reached for comment.
