Slow start to gaming ship sale

Waiting to be bought: Niobe Corinthian berthed in St David?s. Pre-registered bidders for an auction of the ship, to be held soon, were invited to view the vessel yesterday, but no one showed up during the first half of the three-hour viewing session.

The sale of the gaming ship Niobe Corinthian appeared to get off to a slow start in St David’s yesterday.A notice published in the Official Gazette on Friday said pre-registered bidders would be able to attend a preview between 10am and 1pm at Marginal Wharf, but by 11.30am not a single person had turned up.Repeated efforts by The Royal Gazette to contact Deputy Provost Marshal General Donna Millington, at Magistrates’ Court, to find out how many bidders had pre-registered were unsuccessful as of press time. The Niobe Corinthian was brought to the Island with the intention to run it as an offshore casino, operating 12 miles off the coast of Bermuda to avoid local gambling restrictions. However, the ship was raided twice by police and has spent the last few years docked in St David’s. The courts announced last year that the boat would be sold at auction in order to pay money owed to the ship’s crew.Captain Pablo Riera Sr, his son Pablo Jr and crewman Juan Aleman are all expected to receive back pay of $27,451, $6,416 and $6,416, respectively, once the auction has been held.Friday’s notice in the Official Gazette said the auction of the ship would be arranged by the Deputy Provost Marshal General, a Government official, and conducted via sealed bids.
