Cargo ship diverts to Island after chief engineer falls ill
A 15,000 tonne general cargo ship en route from Savannah, Georgia to Finland was forced to divert to Bermuda yesterday to offload a crewman who had taken ill.According to a spokesman at Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre, the Tofton arrived at 1pm at the sea buoy two miles east of Town Cut, in St. George’s. The crewman, who was the ship’s chief engineer, was transported on a pilot rescue boat to Ordnance Island at 2.45pm and was then taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment.Meantime, a replacement chief engineer is due to fly in on a British Airways flight from London this evening. He will be transported to the Tofton once he lands on the island. The Tofton left Murray’s Anchorage at 5pm yesterday to await the new chief engineer’s arrival offshore.There was no word on the condition of the sick crewman at press time.
