Career diplomat appointed to replace Sir Richard Gozney
Bermuda will have a new Governor in May career diplomat George Duncan Raukawa Fergusson.His last posting was as British High Commissioner to New Zealand and Samoa, and the Governor of the Pitcairn Islands from 2006 to 2010.Married with three daughters, the 57-year-old is a direct descendant of two Governors and two Governors-General of New Zealand, according to the online resource Wikipedia.He began his career in 1978 when he joined the Northern Ireland Office. In the early 1990s he served in the Soviet and Eastern Department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London, before moving onto another posting in Seoul.In 1996 Mr Fergusson was appointed the Deputy Head of the Southern African Department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and then Head of the Republic of Ireland Department.Three years later, he became Consul-General in Boston and in 2003 was seconded to the Cabinet Office as Head of the Foreign Policy team.Current Governor Sir Richard Gozney, also a career diplomat, was sworn in as Bermuda’s Governor on December 12, 2007, replacing Sir John Vereker who served five years here.On his appointment as Governor to Bermuda, Mr Fergusson said: “I am delighted to be appointed as Governor. I am an admirer of Bermuda’s great combination of sophisticated business and well preserved history. And I look forward to working with the people of Bermuda and their representatives to play my part in maintaining Bermuda’s high reputation as one of the best places to live, visit and do business.”
