The racial impact of criminal justice in Bermuda will be put under the spotlight by the group Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda (CURB) in an upcoming conference.The group announced it is bringing international as well as local speakers to the event, aimed at finding solutions to the Island’s increasing violence.US civil rights advocate and legal scholar Michelle Alexander will be the keynote speaker for ‘Bermuda’s Criminal Justice System: Intent and Impact’ on March 31.Dr Alexander’s 2010 book ‘The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colour Blindness’ investigated the jailing of black men in the US.CURB is also offering a March 30 pre-conference workshop, under the auspices of the Social Justice Mediation Institute, covering issues such as drug laws, the US Stop List and the criminalisation of black men.The group has invited police, the Department of Corrections, the Bar Association, the Prison Fellowship and members of the Judiciary and social agencies to attend or make submissions.The schedule and registration details will be available at www.uprootingracism.org .The events will be held at the Fairmont Southampton Princess Hotel.Useful websites: www.symediation.org, www.newjimcrow.com.
