2011 Digest of Statistics released

The number of registered vehicles on the Island’s roads went up by a net 305 in 2010, according to the latest statistics digest released by the Statistics Department.But by the end of 2010, there were 635 less private cars on the road than there were in 2009, and an extra 351 more motorcycles and scooters.The number of auxiliary cycles, including livery cycles, shot up from 4,407 in 2009 to 5,232 a 825 increase.But in the category ‘Trucks and Tank Wagons’ the economic downturn has led to a decrease of 156 vehicles.The number of Government GP vehicles stood at 247 at the end of 2010, a 120 rise from the year before.The number of buses and taxis declined by nine vehicles and stood at 76 by the end of 2010, and there were 52 construction vehicles on the Island, 29 less than in 2009.And the number of people using public transport (3,617,772) is the lowest since 2004/05 when just 3,467,929 used public transport.More than 29,000 of those were on charter trips, down from just over 39,000 in 2009, and 23,000 were on sightseeing tours as compared to 31,077 in 2009 and 21,884 in 1999/00.The Bermuda Digest of Statistics contains data extracted from information collected during the last census as well as a range of statistical tables on the Island’s social, demographic, environmental and economic conditions.It is available online at www.statistics.gov.bm.
