A 25-year-old diving instructor has died following an accident off Grotto Bay Hotel.Ryan Craig, a Canadian expatriate working for Triangle Diving Bermuda, was found in shallow water after apparently going scuba diving on his own on Thursday.Devastated diving club owner Graham Maddocks yesterday described the victim as a bright young man, loved by everybody, who was looking forward to a promising career in the diving industry.Mr Maddocks said colleagues raised the alarm on Thursday afternoon when they noted Mr Craig had not been seen since getting into the water at about 1pm.At around 4.35pm, police divers and a marine vessel searched the area for Mr Craig, finally discovering him near the beach in an unresponsive state.He was given first aid and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6.35pm.“I was looking for him in the afternoon, but I thought maybe he’d gone home,” Mr Maddocks told The Royal Gazette yesterday.“I went by his house and he wasn’t there, and then a little while later one of the instructors called me and said we’ve got a problem: Ryan had gone out at one o’clock and they hadn’t seen him since.“At that point I just knew what had happened. We found him by the beach. It’s very sad for everyone that knew him.”Mr Craig, who is married to a Bermudian, had worked for Triangle Diving for about a year and had worked with Mr Maddocks creating a documentary about lionfish in Bermuda’s waters.The film, shot and edited by Mr Craig, shows how vast numbers of lionfish have appeared mainly because private aquariums have been emptied into the sea, and now pose a serious danger to the Island’s native fish.Mr Maddocks said: “He was just the best. Everybody loved Ryan. He was just a really good looking boy, bright, he’d passed all his technical diving exams with straight ‘A’s.“He was a very, very clever young man. I ran Triangle for years. I stopped and handed over the reins to Ryan and he did really well.”Police said they are not treating the incident as suspicious and would not reveal any more information at this stage.
