London has ‘full confidence’ in Gozney
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has given its support to Governor Sir Richard Gozney in the wake of a complaint by former Premier Ewart Brown. The FCO released a statement, in which it said the UK Government has “full confidence” in Sir Richard, and supported his stance on the investigation into a forged cheques conspiracy.Dr Brown called on Whitehall, in a letter written by his lawyer Courtenay Griffiths, to investigate and admonish the departing Governor. He alleged that Sir Richard had “harmed” Bermuda by failing to protect its reputation in response to corruption allegations by businessman David Bolden. And he said that the Governor could have done more to press the Canadian Government to bring to justice those involved in a forged cheques conspiracy meant to discredit his administration.“We can confirm that the FCO received a letter and submission from lawyers, acting on behalf of Dr Brown. We have replied,” said an FCO spokesperson. “The UK Government has full confidence in the Governor.“We have nothing further to add to the Governor’s statement of April 10 stating that ‘we must respect the constitutionality of the Canadian authorities and it would be wrong to interfere with their investigation’.”
