St John Ambulance director receives community award
The executive director of St John Ambulance was today presented with a community service award.Jacqueline Browne was honoured with the quarterly award by Bermuda CableVision for her leadership of the charity.St John Ambulance supplies first aid at public events, 52 weeks of the year.Ms Browne has served as the charity's executive director for almost a decade and was a cadet for the charity as a child. As the only full-time member of the team, she is responsible for managing all aspects of the organisation including volunteer recruitment and retention, training, finance, fundraising and youth programmes. She said at a press conference at Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute where her award was presented this morning: “Thank you CableVision for this award. I worry sometimes that St John Ambulance has been a part of the community for so long that it may be taken for granted so it is helpful to have this opportunity to raise awareness of our needs. The biggest challenge we face is sustaining our volunteer resource as it is cyclical and very few people volunteer beyond a few years. I wholeheartedly recommend St. John Ambulance to anyone interesting in volunteering, as I know from my cadet experience as a teenager that it builds important interpersonal skills such as self-confidence and independence, as well as more specific technical skills."
