Traffic delays expected as Belco repairs cable
Traffic delays are expected on King Street as Belco crews work to repair a damaged cable.Work to an underground cable near Bermuda Fire Station is now underway and is expected to continue through rush hour.Said a Belco spokeswoman: "One lane will be closed to traffic, and appropriate controls will be in place. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption."The repairs were required after a blackout early this morning knocked out power to 1,700 homes near Prospect.According to the spokeswoman, transmission from the Prospect substation failed at 4.40am.Power was restored by 9.05 am.Belco has asked affected customers to conserve energy over the next 24 hours, as repairs to two underground transmission cables are made.Explained the spokeswoman earlier today: "Belco is backfeeding these customers via overhead lines until repairs are complete, which is putting a strain on the system in the Prospect area. By cutting back on electricity use for the next 24 hours, customers will help to avoid further faults and power outages. The company wants customers in the Prospect area to know that there is a possibility they may lose power for short periods or experience partial power over the next day or so."Repairs are also underway on Dundonald Street near Masters.Added the spokeswoman: "Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the public while repair work is being carried out."
