Island represented at world’s largest dog show
Bermuda dogs took part at the largest show in the world, Crufts, for the first time ever.A Whippet and two Salukis from the Island were among more than 22,000 pets competing at the event, in Birmingham in the UK.They were able to enter the showpiece after last October’s Bermuda Kennel Club’s International All Breed Championship was selected as a qualifying competition.Carole and Ian Havercroft’s Saluki Myth took fourth place in the Special Juniors, for dogs aged less than 18 months and was presented with a Crufts certificate.Kathy Williams’ Bermuda-bred 13-year-old Whippet Whispa took part in the veteran class, and was the second oldest dog in the ring.Ms Williams’ Saluki Kali entered the open bitches class, a tough contest in which she was the youngest dog. Kali went on to win reserve Saluki at the Irish Kennel Club’s Celtic Winners Show in Dublin, Ireland.The Bermuda dogs were cheered on at last month’s event by a support of about 20 who won recognition from the stadium announcer, according to Mrs Havercroft.
