INSIDE MIRRORS
Nearly five years on, the Mirrors Programme has touched the lives of hundreds — and the statistics show how.More than 400 young people have followed through on the life skills programme and 1,525 adults have participated. As a results-driven initiative, part of the Mirrors ethos is keeping a running score of the programme’s success.Said programme coordinator Kimberley Jackson: “We follow our participants in three areas: education, employment and the criminal justice system. Our goal is to improve human capacity at the society level.”As of March, the youth coaching programme showed that of the 195 students who completed the residential and nine-month follow through, 92, or 47 percent, graduated from high school; 68, or 35 percent, were getting their high school diploma — and a total of 82 percent had either graduated or were enrolled in education.Of the 92 graduated students, 29 went on to higher education. There were 29 students, or 15 percent, who dropped out of school.Employment is a key factor of the programme. Following completion, 37 percent of participants were in jobs at the six month mark; 46 percent after one year and 49 percent two years on.Mirrors is not directed at offenders, but those who run afoul of the law stand to benefit. As of March, 97 percent of participants from the seven cohort groups had not offended six months on.A year on, data for six groups showed 96 percent had kept out of trouble, and for four cohort groups, two years on, the figure was 89 percent.Mirrors also runs the Coaching for Success programme for middle schoolers.Of the 111 students enrolled, 94 percent passed at the fourth marking period in June 2011.Ms Jackson added: “We’re looking to add health as an area to follow.“There’s a physical required to start the programme, which has uncovered diabetes and asthma that some didn’t even know they had.”
