Golf tournament will make donation to New Beginnings
The Tatem Memorial golf tournament included the New Beginnings $1 Million Campaign among its beneficiaries this year.Charitable golfer Manny Faria reported a fine turnout for the event, held at Belmont last Saturday.Donations are now being counted. One-third will go to a fund in support of the Mirrors community programme for 19- to 24-year-old men and to educational grants for graduates of Mirrors and like programmes.Mr Faria, of sporting group Tuff Dogs, supports Mirrors because “our young people who need help aren’t a group that a lot of people are reaching out to assist”.“That in itself was enough to get us on board,” he said. The annual tournament prides itself on supporting “lesser known charities”.Proceeds, which come primarily from the sponsorship flags around the course, are down somewhat in the recession climate. The tournament took in $7,000 last year and reaped $12,000 in 2010. The New Beginnings campaign was one of three causes for 2012.“It’s important for our young people to get the help and structure that they need,” Mr Faria said. “All that costs money, so we’re glad to help them any way we can.”Each contribution carries the New Beginnings Education Trust close to the $1 million mark, over the year ahead.Useful website: www.tuffdogs.net.
