Fake US $100 bills may be on the Island, warn police
Police have issued a warning after seizing what are suspected to be high quality counterfeit US $100 bills.A police spokeswoman said: “The suspected fake US currency was intercepted at a local financial institution and is believed to have originated overseas.“As a result, the public is advised to be vigilant regarding US $100 bills in circulation locally. In particular, US $100 bills bearing a series (year of printing) of either 1996 or 2006 should be closely inspected for authenticity.”The spokeswoman advised that two security features can assist in identifying a genuine US $100 bill. They are:l A polyester strip bearing the wording “USA 100”, which appears to the left of the Issuing Bank Seal (the wording can be seen when the bill is held up to the light).l The micro printed wording “The United States of America” which is printed repeatedly to form a line around the outside edge of the portrait (visible with a magnifying glass). For more information, visit www.bermudapolice.bm and click on ‘counterfeit currency’.Anyone with concerns over the authenticity of their US $100 bills should report them to the main police number at 295-0011 or their bank at the earliest opportunity.
