Fairmont boosts rugby programme for ‘at-risk’ youth

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has donated $10,000 to Beyond Rugby, a programme targetting at-risk youth.And Fairmont Southampton has established the Malcolm K Outerbridge Jr Memorial Trophy in honour of the 18-year-old who was killed on the Railway Trail near his Warwick home last October.The trophy is presented annually to the most valuable player at the Beyond Rugby Bermuda School Championship at the National Sports Centre - this year’s event was held yesterday.“This tragic incident brought home for many of us at the Fairmont Southampton how perilous life has become for so many of our Island’s youth,” said Shelley Meszoly, regional director of sales and marketing. “Through this grant and the annual trophy, we celebrate the life of Malcolm K Outerbridge Jr and, in working with Beyond Rugby, hope that something positive may emerge from this tragedy.”Sixty children from Dellwood Middle School and CedarBridge Academy participate in Beyond Rugby which includes an after-school homework academy, meals, practice sessions and rugby matches across the Island.The hotel is also providing volunteers to assist with the after-school programme.
