Project Action –co-founder dies
Judith Stewart, co-founder of Project Action, died this week after a long period of illness.Project Action co-founder, Cindy Swan yesterday called Ms Stewart a caring, compassionate and loving person. “We will miss her dearly, but we at Project Action feel that her caring spirit has helped thousands and will continue to be reflected through the free service still being provided through Project Action.”Mrs Swan said she first met Mrs Stewart in 1997 after their husbands, Kim Swan and Bob Stewart, were named as candidates for the UBP.Together, they noticed a lack of stimulation available for many of the Island’s seniors and set out to do something. The pair began making regular trips to the St George’s Parish Rest Home to entertain the residents.“We would tell stories, Judith would play the piano and before long we became attached to the seniors and decided to raise money to buy them a bus to take them out on trips,” Mrs Swan said. From there, the pair set out to provide more opportunities for the seniors to get out and about, creating Project Action to provide free bus transportation for seniors in public and private rest homes with the support of the late Sir John Plowman and philanthropist David Barber.Since its inception, Project Action has touched the lives of thousands and continues to remain a relevant and necessary free service for Seniors and the Physically Challenged in Bermuda.Claudette Fleming of Age Concern said she was deeply saddened by Mrs Stewart’s passing.“From what I do remember of Judith, she had a spirit of vibrancy,” she said. “She was also extremely committed to seeing the fulfillment of the Project Action initiative, despite some initial disappointments and setbacks.“Judith’s memory will certainly live on through the valuable work of Project Action and through the work of her daughter Elizabeth Stewart and her newly formed charity ‘Action on Alzheimer’s and Dementia.’“As the Executive Director of Age Concern, I have had the privilege of being in the diverse company of individuals who have been passionately concerned about the welfare of others. Judith Stewart has been one of those individuals.”
