Buses service to stop for two hours on Tuesday for meeting over new schedule
Bus service across the Island will halt for two hours on Tuesday morning as drivers meet to ratify their new schedule.Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Transportation Minister Derrick Burgess said that bus service will stop between 10.30am and 12.30pm.He explained the break in service will be caused by bus operators meeting to ratify the proposed new work schedule, intended to maximise efficiency and reduce overtime. He said the meeting was scheduled for Tuesday morning to help minimise the impact of the service stopping.“The workers have decided that they all should be present because they are talking about their schedule,” Mr Burgess said.“They haven’t had their schedule changed in ten years. It’s not like they are stopping for the sake of stopping.”The Minister said he is certain the new schedule will be ratified, saying: “I’m an eternal optimist. It will be ratified.”In a separate press conference, Bermuda Industrial Union President Chris Furbert said bus operators have been able to look at the new schedule, and have been asked to make any suggestions at the meeting.“We are expecting that at the meeting on Tuesday the operators will have had a better chance to look at them and put their views forward,” Mr Furbert said.He also said the meeting had been scheduled to take place this Friday, but was moved to Tuesday at the request of Mr Burgess. While the Ministry of Transportation would not reveal the details of the new schedule yesterday, Mr Burgess said in March that bus trips that currently end at Grotto Bay would continue to St George’s. Similarly, trips that currently end at Barnes’ Corner would continue to Somerset.Mr Burgess also said the new schedule would include increased service on both Sunday mornings and after 8pm on weekdays.
