Bishop White to announce retirement
Anglican Bishop of Bermuda Patrick White is due to announce his retirement tomorrow, The Royal Gazette has learned.Although the Bishop refused to confirm or deny the news, a reliable source confirmed that he plans to leave his post on or before his 70th birthday in September.Asked about the topic yesterday, Bishop White said: “An announcement will be forthcoming. I cannot say more than that at this point.”At present, the laws of the Anglican Church in Bermuda state that a bishop “may” retire at 65 and “shall” retire at 70.The Royal Gazette understands that the synod debated the idea of extending the retirement age recently, but the move was rejected.Bishop White has been in his position since 2009, having replaced Bishop Ewen Ratteray. Bishop Ratteray was 66 years old when he retired.According to our source, who preferred to remain anonymous, Bishop White will share his news with the church congregations tomorrow.He has overseen a period of church history that included a vote in 2010 to overturn 400 years of tradition and allow women priests in Bermuda; a move that he backed.The Bishop was born in Bermuda and moved to Canada aged ten. His career prior to taking on the top role was split between Toronto, Pembroke, and then St Paul’s church in Paget.
