Bermuda will this week begin a three-day series of events for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, celebrating her 60-year reign.Events are scheduled to begin on Saturday at noon, with the ferry JL Cecil Smith, the vessel Her Majesty used while visiting Bermuda in 2009, leading a flotilla of local vessels from Hamilton to Dockyard.At the same time, Dockyard will be hosting a street festival, complete with food and entertainment.At around 9pm that evening, beacons will be lit at Commissioners House, Fort Hamilton and Fort St Catherine, mirroring beacons being lit across the Commonwealth.Events will continue on Sunday with a special Service of Thanksgiving for the Diamond Jubilee at St Peter’s Church in St George’s.The service will begin at 11am, and will be followed by a garden party in the churchyard, featuring the debut performance of the “Jubilee Fanfare,” commissioned of Major DB Robinson, Director of Music for the Bermuda Regiment.The Corporation of Hamilton will meanwhile host Picnic in the Park.On Monday the Island will host “Charity Day,” with both public and private sectors being asked to support local causes. Outward Bound is the proposed Jubilee charity due to it’s work with Bermuda’s young people.New Governor George Fergusson will meanwhile take part in the planting of a Bermuda Cedar on Coney Island, Hamilton Parish, in an area that has been designated the Jubilee Grove.The grove is indented to complement reforestation efforts on the Island, while mirroring a similar project in the UK.And at 4.30pm on Monday, two Bermudian students will be named Jubilee Scholars, based on their academic prowess and all-around qualities.
