Flotilla kicks off Diamond Jubilee celebrations
Governor George Fergusson and Acting Premier Michael Scott saluted Queen Elizabeth II's reign of duty and honour as they kicked off Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Dockyard today.About 50 boats dressed up in Union Jack colours sailed from Hamilton to the West End to begin a weekend of festivities on the Island.Mr Fergusson, Mr Scott and former Premier Dame Jennifer Smith were aboard the flotilla before making brief speeches to the public gathered by the ferry terminal.Mr Fergusson said of the Queen: "Her reign covers a period of immense change for Bermuda and most of her territories."There's a tremendous amount for us to celebrate both in change and the public service duty and honourable conduct in 60 years."Mr Scott said: "No one can gainsay the wonderful commitment of Queen Elizabeth's service to Britain, to the Commonwealth and to the territories of which she has authority."Dozens of locals and tourists were in Dockyard for a street festival sponsored by Wedco, in spite of overcast weather.A tour of Commissioner's House and tea party are among the other activities planned, as well as events in Hamilton and St George's over the weekend.For more pictures click here
