Media Council orders Worker’s Voice to print retraction
The Worker’s Voice must publish a retraction for a story about KFC which blurred facts and commentary, according to the Media Council.Earlier this year Kentucky Fried Chicken (Bermuda) Ltd filed a complaint about a January 30 article in the Worker’s Voice, which is published by the Bermuda Industrial Union. That story, by Alvin Williams, stated that KFC had made a recent attempt to decertify the union. The complaint comes in the midst of a prolonged dispute between the union and the fast food eatery over the existence of a collective bargaining agreement between the parties. In a statement released yesterday, the council said: “The Media Council has concluded that the article infringed Clause 3 (A) and (C) of the Code in that the article contained an inaccuracy, and the writer failed to distinguish clearly between comment and conjecture and fact.”As a result of the ruling, the Worker’s Voice will have to publish a correction without comment, saying that the statement was inaccurate.
