This could be the future face of one of Bermuda’s unions. The Bermuda Public Service Union recently put forward plans for a major redevelopment of their Angle Street headquarters, including the clearing of the existing site and construction of a new state-of the art facility. However BPSU President Kevin Grant stressed that the application is only in principle, and there are no plans to move forward with the project right now.“There is an intention to do it, but we just realised that in these economic times it’s not affordable,” Mr Grant explained.“However, we thought that it was prudent to put permission in place for when we can move ahead.”Regarding the cost of the project, he said that no bids on the building costs have been put out at this stage. The proposal, which went before the Development Application’s Board yesterday, includes the demolition of existing buildings on the site and the building of two connected three-storey buildings. The larger of the two buildings, which will lie adjacent to Brunswick Street, will feature underground parking for 15 cars, BPSU offices on the first floor, an assembly hall on the second floor, and a lecture hall on the third floor. The design of the building heavily features glass, with large windows covering two floors of the building’s west wall. The second building, which would be adjacent to Beacon Street, would have an underground games room, a ground level member’s lounge, and a second floor function room. The northwest area of the site would be kept as a green, outdoor plaza, which can be used in good weather for outdoor functions.Addressing the Advisory Architectural Panel about the design on April 26, agents for the project said the building is intended to reflect the meaning of the union, namely solidarity, strength and transparency.According to the minutes of the meeting, the agents told the council: “From a conceptual stand point they wanted the design to reflect the new building’s location on Cedar Avenue as the ‘gateway to the city.’“The design included the use of lots of glass to give the feeling of transparency, which reflects part of the union’s mandate.”Along with containing space for union functions, the agents said that the union will be able to rent out areas such as the building’s halls and function rooms, to provide additional revenue.According to the minutes, council members expressed some concerns about the site’s energy efficiency, suggesting the glass walls would attract a great deal of heat and as a result the building would require more electricity to cool, but otherwise praised the project for it’s location and design.Speaking on the plan, Mr Grant said that one of the core ideas of the project is to help revitalise the area, which he said is already being rejuvenated through other developments.
