The Spirit of Bermuda made a flawless start to the Newport to Bermuda race today

Spirit of Bermuda made a flawless downwind start in the Newport Bermuda Race under perfect conditions today.With her full set of sails blooming, the 118ft sloop gracefully sailed out of Narrangasett Bay towards open seas with an enthusiastic crew of 32.The final starting sequence went off without a hitch as Spirit's starboard watch - led by Michael Ashton - lived up to expectations.Thousands of spectators gathered along the shoreline to catch a glimpse of Spirit as she crossed in front of the race committee aboard a US Coast Guard vessel.Bermuda Sloop Foundation co founder Malcolm Kirkland and wife Martha were among the many spectator boats that escorted Spirit out of the bay.Other class boats are circling the bay in anticipation for their respective starts.The race began on time under sunny skies and favorable 15-20 knot northeast breezes.Spirit is expected to be among the first boats to arrive in Bermuda this year.* Colin will be bringing regular updates from the Spirit as she sails to Bermuda.
