A new wing has been formally opened at the Lorraine Rest Home by Warwick Parish Council. The new wing includes four new bedrooms, a recreation room, and an area housing state-of-the-art security equipment to watch over the entire facility.Speaking at the opening on Thursday, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Patrice Minors praised not just the Council, but those who volunteer their time to run the home.“In a world where everything seems so fast paced, where the needs of self seem to override the needs of others, it’s reassuring and humbling to see individuals demonstrate this kind of care and compassion for their fellow citizens,” Ms Minors said.“The Council has fulfilled the need of meeting the demands of our senior population. And what is becoming apparent, especially to this Government, is that as Bermuda’s life expectancy rates rise, the needs for senior care, both residential and day care services, will be a necessity.”She said that since the Progressive Labour Party took power in 1998, the Government had worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the Island’s seniors.“As we move forward, we will continue to make certain and steady progress to address their needs,” Ms Minors said.“We will continue to support Lorraine Rest Home, and as we prepare for the new challenges which lie ahead for this sector of our community, we can confidentially say that we will develop new and innovative ways to meet our seniors’ needs by working hard to preserve and improve their quality of life.”Last year, Paul Claude of the council said that there was a master plan to redevelop the home, not only increasing beds but potentially evolving into an assisted living home as the need for such services increases.
