Replica settler’s house project progressing
The project to create a replica of a 17th century settler’s house is now well on its way, with the building frame and roof structure completed. The building, located next to Carter House, Bermuda’s oldest home, has a frame made of raw tree trunks. The aim is to use only what would have been available to settlers on the Island 400 years ago.President of the St David’s Historical Society Rick Spurling said the project is going well. The next steps are the fireplace and the laths, which are strips of wood used to build walls. After that will come clay mortar and thatch made from Palmetto branches.A group of schoolchildren from St George’s Preparatory visited the site on June 1 and had the chance to try out some of the building tools.“They loved using the augur, the adze and the drawknife,” Mr Spurling said in an e-mail. “We wouldn’t let them use the axes!”
