Hundreds of senior citizens gathered at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess yesterday to watch the inaugural Seniors Got Talent show.Performers sang, danced, read poetry, and played musical instruments in front of the packed Harbour View Ballroom as part of the annual Seniors' Week put on by the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.Heather Whalen, senior Community and Cultural Affairs officer, said the 26-year-old event was designed as a way to honour Bermuda's seniors.“Our community is where it is today because of them,” Ms Whalen said.“This is just one way of saying thank you for all that you've done.”Thirteen different acts took to the stage over the course of the afternoon to showcase their talents.Danny Richardson played a few selections on his ukulele.“It was a good outing, well attended,” he said after the show.“I got a chance to see people I would never normally get a chance to see. I wish this could happen every week.”Dorothy Morrissey is on the committee to help organise the event, having attended for 12 years.She read a poem entitled 'I Refuse to Be Discouraged' by Lisa Kurtzer.“I love it. I come every year,” the senior citizen said.“I love any activity that requires participation and giving of your talent.”Jeannie Isaac, a coordinator for Seniors' Week, said she was pleased with the results of the first Seniors Got Talent show.“I thought it was fantastic,” Ms Isaac said. “They all did wonderfully. There was a good variety.”Attendees were asked to fill out a ballot choosing their favourite performances and hand it in after the show. The winning acts will be announced today as the seniors display everything from casual to formal wear at a fashion show and high tea. A picnic and fun day on Friday at Shelly Bay Field will finish the week's festivities.For more pictures click here
