Police thank the public after the capture of fugitive

Fugitive Shane Todd was captured after eight days on the run in a police operation on Saturday.Todd, a violent sex offender, was spotted by a member of the public in the area of Summit View, Hamilton Parish; police say he was apprehended without incident on Saturday shortly after 11am.He had failed to return to the Prison Farm in St George’s after being allowed out on work release on Friday, June 29.Todd, 36, was jailed for 15 years in 2005 after sexually assaulting a teenager and threatening her with a machete while she tried to protect her disabled aunt.On the same night, he also subjected three elderly women to a terrifying robbery, attacking them with a machete and throwing one down the stairs before stealing a handbag with contents valued at $2,750.A court appearance over his escape from prison is now expected in the near future.Bermuda Police Service said in a statement: “We would like to thank members of the public for their assistance in this matter. Todd is now at Hamilton Police Station where he will be processed and detained.”Commissioner of Correction Eddie Lamb has previously claimed the term ‘escape’ was grossly misleading, as Todd was on work release at the time.
