Minister and Governor check out visiting Royal Navy vessels
National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief was this week shown RFA Argus, a Royal Navy ship deployed to support Bermuda and the region. The 574ft (175m) vessel was berthed in Dockyard, with ship staff meeting with the Police Service and the Regiment about available resources on the Island. On Monday, Mr Perinchief joined Governor George Fergusson and members of the Emergency Measures Organisation’s Executive on a tour of the vessel.Originally built as a container ship, the vessel was requisitioned in 1982 for service in the Falklands War and later purchased to serve as an Aviation Training Ship. The RFA Argus has since been fitted to support rescue, military and disaster relief, with an 100-bed on-board hospital facility, heavy equipment and hurricane stores.Mr Perinchief said he was impressed with the facilities, while Governor Fergusson said the tour demonstrates the resources that are available to Bermuda if disaster strikes.“The UK Government has trained personnel and important equipment which can be deployed in support of Bermuda’s recovery efforts following a natural disaster,” he said. The RFA Argus was one of two Royal Navy ships visiting Bermuda this week. The other is RFA Fort Rosalie.
