PALS given $82,311 boost by St Baldrick’s fundraisers

Hair-razoring: This year’s St Baldrick’s charity head shave raised more than $372,000, and just over $82,000 of that total has been given to PALS’ Children’s Care Fund.

People getting their head shaved for St Baldrick’s Day earlier this year have ensured the PALS’ Children’s Care Fund received a welcome $82,311 funding boost.A total of $372,571 was collected through the tenth annual event held in March the funds will be used in support of cancer research.Donors supporting St Baldrick’s in Bermuda had the option of giving to the St Baldrick’s Foundation or PALS Children’s Care Fund in aid of young cancer patients here.Part of the PALS donation will help fund two additional paediatric cancer studies at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute said the charity’s president, Ann Smith Gordon.PALS has provided grants to researchers at Dana-Farber since 2008 due to the Bermuda medical community’s close ties with the Institute.PALS treasurer John Hill stated: “As a result of these ‘head-shaving’ funds, to date PALS has been able to grant from its Children’s Care Fund a total of $1,383,736 in paediatric cancer research awards to physicians associated with Dana-Farber.”Dr Leo Wang was awarded a grant of $330,000 to be paid over three years, and Dr Joanne Wolfe was awarded a $49,992 grant.PALS and St Baldrick’s have been partnering since the first St Baldrick’s event in 2002. Participants gather pledges and then have their heads shaved in March, on or around St. Patrick’s Day.
