New city parking regulations went into effect yesterday to facilitate the free flow of traffic on part of Front Street.Six parking spaces have been removed from the north side of Front Street between Court and King Streets as a result of new traffic lights installed at that intersection.Chief Operating Officer and City of Hamilton Secretary Ed Benevides said: “Parking changes have to be instituted to ensure that traffic continues to flow freely in the area, specifically during rush hour.”Signs were posted last week to notify motorists of the change, but a number of cars parked outside the Supreme Court Registrar’s office building on Front Street were ticketed yesterday. That prompted a number of complaints to the City of Hamilton offices by motorists apparently unaware of the changes.“There is no parking in this area from 8am to 10am and between 4pm and 6pm Monday to Saturday,” said Mr Benevides.“The City of Hamilton is aware of the concerns expressed by the general public.“These traffic and parking modifications are necessary to ensure this busy intersection allows for full line of sight of the intersection by motorists and ensures the safety of pedestrians.”The dock entrance opposite Court Street will become operational on Monday, July 23.“This means tractor trailers and trucks entering and leaving the docks will do so through the new entrance,” Mr Benevides stated.“The other change which was implemented a few months ago, to ensure the public’s safety, is the bus stop which was located outside of Customs House has been removed.“In the coming weeks, we will continue to monitor the traffic flow at this intersection and may make modifications, as needed. I urge the public, pedestrians and motorists, to continue to use extreme caution in this area.”Anyone with questions is asked to telephone 292-1234.
