Friends band together for search for missing man
Close to 100 people have responded to the call for help to search for Rudolph ‘Rudy’ Smith who has been missing for close to two weeks. Now the push is on to get another 200 people or more to cover larger sections of areas to be searched starting on Saturday. On Wednesday this newspaper reported a longtime friend of Mr Smith, who asked not to be named, launched efforts to build a search team comprised of concerned residents. The spokeswoman confirmed yesterday that search efforts will begin tomorrow.“We have approximately 75 people who have responded already who are willing to search. Now we’re looking for another 200 or more walkers to cover more areas,” she said.“All willing participants will meet at the Arboreteum parking lot on Montpelier Road in Devonshire on Saturday at approximately 11am.“Participants must be prepared to walk through the whole area of Pembroke and no children under the age of 16 years of age will be allowed to search,” she added.A decision will be made on Saturday on where to focus the initial search efforts, but the search will take place starting Sunday from 11am to 4pm.The spokeswoman said areas of interest include “derelict homes, empty buildings, shorelines, beaches, large grassy areas, basements, embankments, and the water”.“We are also asking for support by boat owners and of course we are looking for as many walkers as possible. If Rudy is not found on Saturday we will then meet on Sunday to search again.“We plan to search each parish until Rudy is found, and the search will continue on throughout the week until he is either found or we have covered all ground,” she said. The group is also asking all neighbourhood watch groups to come on board in support of the search with the Friswell’s Hill United group. And there is also an appeal for distributors to donate water, batteries and flash lights to assist.“We will be knocking on people’s doors to ask for permission to be on their property, and if the search continues past Sunday we are also asking employers to be as lenient as possible with regards to time off,” she added.Members of the group have also picked up survey maps from the Department of Planning to assist in the search efforts.Meanwhile, the investigation into the disappearance of Rudolph Smith is ongoing.A spokesman for the Bermuda Police Service said: “Detectives are still interested in speaking with anyone who may have any information regarding Mr. Smith’s whereabouts or what may have happened to him.”Anyone who can assist is urged to contact the Serious Crime Unit in confidence at 247-1340, or alternatively the confidential & anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.
